From self DOUBT to self LED 🪴

Before I realized how much my own story was downplaying my strengths, I was convinced that the role I was doing at work was all I would ever do. I can remember conversations with my wife when I said, “I never want to be a manager - it’s too much stress to deal with.” But what I was really saying was:

Do you know that fear?
The fear that says, "Those things aren't for you."
"Don't even want more"
"You'll be disappointed."

What I do for work happens to be very technical. I have been with the same company in Silicon Valley for two decades, and while I honestly love what I do, my title at that company doesn’t make up the whole of who I am; not even close.

I had mistakenly believed that being a leader depended on your title, and I couldn’t see my calling beyond my role at the office. When I started to dig into my story, I witnessed excitement grow within me to relationally serve and lead those that I was already working with on a daily basis.

When I began to define who I am and what I am called to (this happens at level 4 of the certificate program), I realized that younger parts of me have been waiting for a more healed version of myself to show up and acknowledge the gifts that have been planted in me all along. Before completing the Freedom Movement Coaching Certificate, I believed I was content to clock in and clock out of my same job forever - never awakening the curiosity of desire within me that says, “We’re actually made for more than this.”

More doesn’t always mean different - sometimes, “more” is found in the mundane. God isn’t asking me to change my occupation, join a non-profit, or launch my own company (this is commendable, but for sure isn’t for everyone). As I become aware of my unique gifts and the ways that my story has shaped me, I am also coming alive to the calling that is right in front of me. This awareness happens through tending to the grief of unmet needs and allowing God to bring healing to parts of me that I never knew were living in the shadows.

It turns out that I am really gifted at listening to complex issues and reflecting back with integrity and empathy. You may not think that this kind of gift is needed in a corporate office or in your specific vocation - but leadership is acknowledging issues, seeing people, and pointing back to truth.

I wonder what dormant parts of YOU might be waiting to be tended to before they reveal YOUR unique gifts and leadership. What is the “MORE” that you are made for, in the midst of your mundane?
