WILL MY LIFE COUNT?

What will my life's work be known for?
And how will the world remember me after I'm gone? 

Do you ever lay awake in bed at 2:00 am with these same thoughts swirling?
Me too.

I've held diverse roles, ranging from hostess and nanny to personal trainer, pastor, mother, and CEO. While each has left its mark on me, none have fully defined who I am. I embody all of these and none of them entirely. 

It's striking how society often defines us by our professions when God defines us by our adoption. 
Reflecting on my past vocations, I ponder:
Who am I beneath the surface of these job titles?
What is God trying to reveal or instill in me? 

Our lives are narratives - influencing every step, decision, and thought. Did you choose your jobs because they were influenced by a part of your story? There was a level of choice, but not complete autonomy from how you've been shaped and formed. Beneath the surface of each job, a "calling," a "knowing," a "discovery" of your true self was unfolding. Rather than focusing solely on our skills and commitments, perhaps God wants us to recognize the fuller picture of who we are meant to become.

Our vocations are influenced by our environment, yet our true selves are much deeper - our true selves are made up from a collection of every version of us that we have ever been and every influential part of our becoming; the two aspects harmonize. God encourages us to read our life's full story, embracing its twists, jobs, relationships, losses, and joys. Here, we begin to understand our adoption into the grandest story ever told and our unique role within it.

When I die, my deeds may or may not be recounted, but I hope to be remembered for whom I loved and how I loved. Let's nurture what's emerging beneath our actions and responsibilities, letting the collection of our stories and formation define us authentically. Take the time to pause, reflect, look deeper to what is being shaped. See your story and your calling through your adoption; I believe it is here you will find your part in this story.
